Strictly working as a notary or notary signing agent can be lucrative.  However, if you want to take your notary business to the next level to make even more money all you need to do is expand your portfolio.  The way to expand your portfolio is to branch out into other areas related to notary work.  There are many other ways to make money as a notary.   

There’s no need to put limits on yourself as a notary when you can branch out and take on other projects, tasks, and jobs that still fall under notary work.

Let’s explore 12 ways to make money as a notary.

Mentorship and Coaching

If you’re a seasoned notary consider becoming a mentor to other notary newbies.  Or offer a coaching program instead.  Your mentorships or coaching program may consist of virtual classes, live training calls, in person training, weekly check ins, answering questions, having your mentee observe you do notary work, and more. 

Be sure you have time to be a mentor or coach before considering these options.  While there are certainly great benefits to the person being mentored or coached, there are equally great benefits to the mentor as well.  Mentoring and coaching can be very fulfilling and rewarding giving one a sense of purpose.  In addition, mentoring helps keep your skills up and keep you on your toes!  When offering mentorship or coaching you will need to be hands on.

eBooks

Put your notary expertise and knowledge to paper and create an eBook.  Your eBook can be a guide, a “how-to” type book, or whatever else you want it to be.  You can sell the book on your website or even on Amazon.  Digital eBooks are so easy to create and there’s minimal expense involved.  All you really need is a platform to sell the book.  Make sure your topic matches your audience’s needs.  Your eBook should help your audience learn. 

YouTube

It seems every time you turn around someone is starting a YouTube channel.  Some start a channel for fun and others set out with a goal to monetize their channel.

If you have patience, you too can monetize your YouTube channel by growing your channel with subscribers.  Then post videos about notary topics.  It takes about 6 to 7 months average for a channel to really take off provided you are posting videos consistently on topics others are interested in and getting views. 

How does one make money on YouTube?  Ways to make money on YouTube include through advertising revenue, channel memberships, posting affiliate links, and more.

Affiliate programs

You can also join affiliate programs that pertain to notaries.  You can write a blog post or post something on social media and use your affiliate link when you do so.  If someone clicks on your link and purchases the product then you make a commission from the sale.  Affiliate programs allow you to sell whatever the program is offering.  For instance, you may consider selling notary courses, printables, or other digital products from those that offer affiliate programs for their products. 

Perform marriages

If you live in the states of Nevada, South Carolina, Florida, Maine, Tennessee, and Montana you can perform wedding ceremonies as a notary.  Unfortunately, if you don’t live in one of these states you will have to go through extra steps and paperwork if you want to perform marriage ceremonies.  If officiating weddings is something that interests you, but you don’t live in one of the six states that allow notaries to perform weddings, don’t be discouraged.  You’ll just have to go the extra mile by looking up the current laws in your state laws to understand what’s involved in the process to be able to officiate weddings.  Additional qualifications and authorizations are required and vary by state. 

Apostille Services

What is an apostille?  An apostille is an internationally recognized certification used to authenticate public documents. Only consider exploring this option if you are an experienced notary.  Apostille services can be complicated. You’ll need to know what makes a document eligible to be apostilled. If a document is being used overseas you may need to get an apostille.  Apostilles help eliminate the need for businesses to recertify their documents I other documents. 

Courier Services

Adding courier services to your portfolio can be a smart move as there are many businesses who need courier services.  Provide secure and fast delivery and handling of documents to show that you’re reliable and trustworthy. There will always be a need for legal courier services.  If you offer rush delivery and delivery on holidays and weekends you can charge a higher fee and make even more.

Fingerprinting

Did you know that as a notary public you can offer fingerprinting services?  Fingerprinting can be done in ink and in live scan fingerprinting.  The demand for fingerprinting services is high.  Many financial companies, employment agencies, and legal professions need fingerprinting services.  Notaries can become certified finger printers.

Field Inspection

No specific training or qualifications are required to be a field inspector.  If you are detail-oriented and dependable then you should have no problem being hired as a field inspector.

Process Servers

Transcribing

Transcribing and notarizing affidavits, depositions, and other court documents is another way to make money as a notary.  Because these documents will need to be notarized anyway, why not have a notary transcribe them. 

Work for online notary companies

Another way to make money as a notary is to work for online notary companies.  You can still work for yourself but working for a company will increase your notary jobs therefore increasing the amount of money you make. 

To work for an online notary company and provide e-notary services, you’ll have to be commissioned as a e-notary.  Check your stat laws to see if e-notary is offered in your state and if any additional training and an exam is required.

The choices are endless.  There’s absolutely no reason not to be able to make money as a notary.  There are so many options.  Just start with one option and become knowledgeable in that area.  Once you feel comfortable with it, then move on to the next option until you have mastered all the areas that you are interested in.
